Queer Game Narrative in We Know the Devil

There are three main characters of We Know the Devil, Neptune, Jupiter, and Venus. Each scene of the game involves two of the three characters talking together, with the third being isolated. Whichever character is isolated the most (or all three if they’re balanced), becomes “the devil”, and transforms.

During one sequence later in the game, the player can choose to have Jupiter and Neptune spend time in a dark closet together. During this scene the two express romantic feelings for one another and share their frustration with their repressive surroundings. After this conversation they have sex.

Venus is timid and often picked on by other residents of the camp in which the game takes place. For most of the game she is seen and referred to as a man by the other characters and the narration of the game. If she transforms (either by being the most isolated character or if all three transform, Venus transforms into a new form where she uses she/her pronouns. In the ending for the game where all three transform, they have casual intimacy together (as shown in the image above).
