The Undertale series began in 2015 when the first game in the series, Undertale, released on PC. The game follows a human child that has fallen into a world of monsters sealed there after a centuries old war. They embark on a quest to earn their freedom with the help of the residents of the Underground. The gameplay is a hybrid of traditional turn-based battle mechanics and fast-paced reflex challenges (to dodge enemy attacks) similar in style to bullet-hell shooters.
On October 31st, 2018, Toby Fox released Deltarune online, announcing that it was the first chapter of a new game in the series. It later released on PS4 and Nintendo Switch on February 28th, 2019. The game itself follows a similar system to Undertale with a few modifications, in addition to some new characters to the series. It is unknown if Deltarune is a sequel, prequel, or game set in an alternate timeline/universe from the first Undertale game.
