Jade Empire adopts the Wuxia genre (Chinese martial arts fiction), and is set in a heightened, mystical Imperial China. The orphan player must rescue his parental figure, the martial artist Master Li. Players can be either male or female. They develop new fighting styles within the domains of martial arts, weapon styles, magic styles, support styles, and transformation styles. The real time combat is not turn-based, giving players flexibility over how and when characters dodge or attack.
