Horizon Zero Dawn is an open world game that takes place in a future where machines have overrun a post-apocalyptic Earth. The player-character is Aloy, an outcast and skilled machine-huntress. When her tribe, the Nora, is attacked by a mysterious cult, Aloy embarks on a mission beyond the Nora lands to uncover the origin of these people. In the process, she uncovers secrets about the “Old Ones” (mid-21st century people) and her own family history. During her journey, Aloy meets and helps many people from three different tribes – the Carja, the Oseram, and the Banuk – and travels across lands that resemble a future western United States. Aloy learns to hunt and eventually override many novel and deadly machines, and uses these skills, along with new allies, to fight the original attackers of her tribe. The objective of the game is to defeat the cultists, who have teamed up with an AI named HADES to destroy life on earth.
