NiGHTS (along with the other “Nightmaren” created by Wizeman) was designed to be a gender neutral character. As Yuji Naka, a producer and programmer for ​NiGHTS into Dreams,​ states inan interview with NiGTHS Into Dreams.COM​, “the residents in the dream world shouldn’t have a gender, rather, the form of the characters should be determined by the person who is dreaming.” Since NiGTHS Into Dreams was created in Japan, Naka points out that it was easier to deal with issues of gender because Japanese has fewer gender-specific words than European languages.
