Facade, an artifical-intelligence-based interactive drama story created by Michael Mateas and Andrew Stern in 2005, was the winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2006 Slamdance Independent Games Festival. Gameplay puts the user in the home of Trip and Grace, close friends having a small cocktail party. Domestic strife between the couple reaches a boiling point, and the player drives game events by speaking to the couple – either offering support or creating more trouble. By taking such an active role in the argument, the game resembles an interactive stage-play. The final play’s dialogue is transcribed into downloadable text files.
