Madoka Kaname is one of the main characters in the Puella Magi Madoka Magica universe. As the titular character, all of series incarnations revolve around her fate as a magical girl and the problems that arise because of it. Madoka is considered the primary love interest for Homura Akemi in the series, and fans have interpreted Madoka as reciprocating these strong romantic feelings. In most of the endings in the Puella Magi Madoka Magi universe, Madoka ascends to goddess status as a way of protecting her loved ones including Homura. The erotic undertones and romantic subtext to Madoka and Homura’s relationship has led some fans to affectionately refer to this series as “Miserable Lesbians: The Anime”, referencing the dark conclusions of nearly every piece of media in the Puella Magi Madoka Magica universe.
