Dante in Devil May Cry

Dante is the protagonist in the Devil May Cry Series. He has long been interpreted as a potentially gay or queer male character (see here and here). There is also a strong community of boy-on-boy Devil May Cry fan-fiction authors/readers.

In the 2012 trailer for DmC: Devil May Cry (the series’ fifth installment), a news anchor says Dante is a “known sexual deviant.” After a lot of speculation that this definitively demonstrated Dante was a queer male character, chief designer Tameem Antoniades was asked in an interview if Dante was gay. He replied: “No, he’s not gay,” but “I kind of wish he was now” (Conditt, 2012). The anchor, as it turns out, is a demon trying to villainize Dante.
