Otacon, or Dr. Hal Emmerich, first appeared in Metal Gear Solid in 1998 and is a close friend to Solid Snake. There is a great deal of suspicion that he and Snake are “more than friends” (see a full list of evidence identified here, and the comment section here). The U.S. voice actors for the English version of the game have said there is something homoerotic about their scenes together (see here and here), though David Hayter, Snake’s voice actor, refers to Otacon as Snake’s platonic gay sidekick.
